COLLEGE STATION, Texas The Virginia women’s swimming team continued competition Saturday at the 2009 NCAA Championships with preliminaries in the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay and 1650 freestyle. The event, which is being held at the Student Rec Center Natatorium on Texas A&M’s campus, concludes with the final session this evening.
Junior Mei Christensen secured a spot in the finals with the sixth-fastest time in the prelimaries, touching at 1:52.90. Freshman Lauren Smart finished with a time of 1:56.21 for 36th place.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Christensen, Kristen Wallace, Megan Evo and Kristen Moores finished 12th to place them in the consolation finals. The Cavaliers recorded a time of 3:16.50.
Evo clocked a mark of 1:55.37 in the 200 butterfly for 11th place and will swim in the consolation finals of the event tonight. Teammate Liz Shaw placed 20th overall with a time of 1:56.45.
In the 200 breaststroke, Katherine McDonnell placed 40th with a time of 2:13.37, while Ellie Freeman was 44th in 2:14.12.
