Hello and thanks for clicking on my blog! My name is Ginger Miles and as Virginia’s women’s lacrosse volunteer assistant coach – and former goalkeeper – I’ve decided to give anyone who’s interested a behind the scenes look at life on the road with our women’s lacrosse team. We’re certainly a fun bunch and I’ll be posting weekly with the inside scoop. Thanks for reading!

Virginia is one of four US states that consider themselves a commonwealth rather than a state. While not traditionally known as a hotbed for lacrosse, there are some great collegiate teams in the Commonwealth. The strength of our in-state teams has developed and grown over the years and presents us with some huge mid-week games and some fun rivalries.

The battle to see who reigns supreme over the Commonwealth has gotten more and more competitive over the years and our face off against William and Mary was a great display of the level of competition across the state. So far this season we have been able to handle both Virginia Tech and Richmond, but William and Mary certainly brought their “A” game.

After falling behind early, we rallied around late game heroics from several key players to tie it up and launch ourselves into overtime. We carried our momentum into overtime and were able sneak in a goal in the waning minutes of the second overtime period. This was a great win for our team and brings our record to 3-0 in state.

This Tuesday brings another daunting match-up against James Madison which always plays us very well. JMU is arguably our biggest in-state rival (in terms of lacrosse) as players on both sides are always very energized to play each other. I anticipate this game to be high energy, fast and furious all over the field. It will take every ground ball, draw control and caused turnover to come out victorious on Tuesday and that’s what we intend to do.

Coming off a disappointing loss on Saturday against rival Princeton, I think it’s safe to say that the girls are ready to come out strong against JMU. We managed to score first against Princeton (something we hadn’t done in four games), but were unable to muster the same heroics from Tuesday for the win. As a team we’re moving in the right direction and JMU will present us with another formidable opponent and opportunity for us to prove ourselves.

Still left on our in-state slate: at James Madison (March 24), at Old Dominion (April 1), and at George Mason (April 14).

See if we can go undefeated in the Commonwealth starting this Tuesday in Harrisonburg!

Happy Spring!
Ginger
