COLLEGE STATION, Texas The Virginia men’s swimming team continued competition Friday in the 2009 NCAA Championships with preliminaries in the 400 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. The event, which is being held at the Student Rec Center Natatorium on Texas A&M’s campus, runs through Saturday.
Sophomore Scot Robison earned a spot in the finals of the 200 freestyle tonight after placing sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 1:33.29. Ricky Berens of Texas clocked the fastest time of the morning session (1:32.73).
Also in the 200 free, Matt McLean finished 31st (1:35.73) and David Karasek was 33rd (1:35.82). John Snawerdt also placed 42nd overall with a time of 1:36.95 and Taylor Smith was 45th (1:37.05).
Senior Pat Mellors clocked a time of 3:44.54 to earn a spot in the consolation finals of the 400 individual medley. Mellors, the school record holder in the event, finished 11th in the preliminaries. Darren Ankosko placed 30th overall with a time of 3:52.23.
Virginia’s 200 medley relay team of Eric Olesen, Ryan Hurley, Lee Robertson and Robison also will swim tonight in the consolation finals. The Cavaliers finished in a time of 1:25.99 to set a conference record previously held by Georgia Tech (1:26.00) at the ACC Championships last month.
Three Cavaliers swam in the 200 fly, with Robertson leading the way with a 19th-place finish in 46.68. Freshman Peter Geissinger was 35th (47.44) and senior Pat Reams was 40th (47.75).
Olesen went on to finish 23rd in the 100 back (47.33) while Hurley placed 32nd in the 100 breast (54.51).
