REDWOOD CITY, Calif. The sixth-ranked Virginia rowing team swept UCLA and won the Second Varsity Eight race against No. 5 California on the first day of competition at the Pac-10 Challenge at Redwood Shores.
UVa’s Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Novice Eight all came up with victories over UCLA in the afternoon session.
The Varsity Eight won with a time of 6:48.4, edging UCLA’s time of 6:54.3. The Second Varsity Eight had a winning time of 6:52.8.
In the Varsity Four, UVa won with a time of 8:31.7, compared with the Bruins’ time of 8:37.3.
In the morning races, Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight (6:31.7) defeated Cal (6:34.9).
“California is a very good team and we struggled a little bit against them, but the Second Varsity Eight had a good race,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “In the afternoon, we did a good job of responding. We’re looking forward to racing Stanford in the morning.”
Athletes competed in Henley-style racing, a one-on-one or a two-boat race used for competition at the famous Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England.
On Sunday, UVa will take on No. 4 Stanford with races at 9:32 a.m. (Varsity Eight), 10:28 a.m. (Second Varsity Eight), 11:24 a.m. (Varsity Four) and 11:40 a.m. (Novice Eight).
Following the Pac-10 Challenge is a home regatta against Ohio State on Saturday, April 4, at Lake Monticello. Races begin at 9 a.m.
