7-OT Game to Be Replayed Monday Night on ESPN Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VAVirginia’s 7-overtime men’s lacrosse game against Maryland Saturday afternoon will be rebroadcast tonight from 10pm-1am on ESPN Classic. Brian Carroll scored one minute into the seventh overtime period to give the Cavaliers a 10-9 win in the longest game in Division I history.
The Cavaliers fought back from a 3-goal deficit in the game’s final six minutes. Steele Stanwick started Virginia on its game-tying run with his fourth goal of the game with just under six minutes to play. Danny Glading pulled the Cavaliers to within one with his only goal of the game with five minutes and eight seconds remaining in regulation. Carroll sent the game into overtime with a goal 29 seconds later.
Adam Ghitelman made a career-high 22 saves to highlight a tremendous performance by the Cavalier defense. Six of his saves came in the seven overtime periods (on 13 Maryland shots) and included several from point blank range.
The Cavaliers did not allow a goal in the game’s final 38:32 and fought off five extra-man opportunities, including three in the overtimes.
