Adam Ghitelman Receives Two Player of the Week Awards

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VAGoalie Adam Ghitelman has received two player of the week honors for his performance in Saturday’s 10-9 win over Maryland in seven overtimes. He was named National Player of the Week by Laxnews.com, as well as Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week.

A sophomore from Syosset, N.Y., turned in one of the best games of his career in helping UVa win the longest game in Division I history (85 minutes). The Cavaliers, who fought back from a 3-goal deficit in the final six minutes of regulation and won on Brian Carroll’s goal one minute into the seventh overtime period.

Ghitelman made 22 saves, the most by a Virginia goalie in five years, while allowing just nine goals. Six of his saves came in the seven overtime periods (on 13 Maryland shots) and included several from point blank range. Ghitelman also finished with five ground balls, the second-highest total on the team. His previous career high was 14 on two occasions earlier this season.

The Cavalier defense did not allow a goal in the game’s final 38:32 and fought off five extra-man opportunities, including three in the overtimes.

Virginia plays North Carolina this Saturday in the first game of the Big City Classic tripleheader at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. The game is set to faceoff at noon and will be televised by ESPNU.
