No. 9 Virginia falls to Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. For the first time in 33 tries, the Old Dominion women’s lacrosse team defeated the ninth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, 13-10, on Tuesday afternoon in the Pawhatan Sports Complex. The loss marks the first for the Cavaliers against an in-state opponent this season and drops them to 7-5 on the season, while Old Dominion improves to 6-2.

Senior Blair Weymouth led the Cavaliers with three goals, while senior Jenny Hauser had two goals and two assists. Junior Kaitlin Duff had two goals, while redshirt junior Whitaker Hagerman, junior Brittany Kalkstein and freshman Julie Gardner each had a score. Senior Ashley McCulloch rounded out the scoring with two assists.

For Old Dominion, Lisa Bernardini and Ashley Kellogg each had four goals, while Sarah Geary came up huge in goal for the Monarchs, recording 12 saves.

The Cavaliers matched their quickest start to goal this season, with Weymouth firing a shot into the back of the net just 24 seconds into play. Hauser made it two straight for Virginia with an unassisted score at 27:00 and then set up Hagerman for a third straight Cavalier goal at 25:31.

Despite the slow start, the Monarchs regrouped and tallied three-straight to even the score at 3-3, before Hauser notched her second at 19:09 just 11 seconds after ODU’s third.

Ashley Kellogg then tacked on three more scores for Old Dominion, giving the Monarchs their first lead of the game, at 6-4 with 6:25 left in the half.

Hauser won the ensuing draw control and raced up field with Duff, who fired a goal at 6:15, before Kalkstein erased the deficit with a goal just 15.4 seconds before halftime.

The Monarchs scored two goals in the opening five minutes of the second half and added a third at 22:22 to take their largest lead of the contest, at 9-6.

Gardner halted the streak with a score at 20:05, but ODU matched the Cavaliers’ effort and extended its lead to four, at 12-8, with 12:37 to play. The Monarchs maintained their advantage before Weymouth tallied the final score for the Cavaliers marking the 30th hat trick of her career to account for the final 13-10 score.

The Cavaliers will return to action this weekend, heading to Massachusetts for an Atlantic Coast Conference contest at Boston College on Saturday and a game at Harvard on Sunday. Opening draw for both contests is slated for 1 p.m.
