CHARLOTTESVILLE Virginia’s seventh-ranked rowing team will face Ohio State at Lake Monticello Saturday. Races begin at 9 a.m., with the schedule of events as follows: Second Novice Eight, Third Varsity Four, First Novice Eight, Second Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, Varsity Eight.
The Varsity Eight is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start time.
Virginia is coming off of a strong showing at the Pac-10 Challenge last weekend. Its Second Varsity Eight (coxswain Cristine Candland, Lauren Shook, Claudia Blandford, Martha Kuzzy, Helen Tompkins, Christine Roper, Susie Chalker, Nora Phillips and Shalane Carlson) defeated California, UCLA and Stanford en route to earning Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week honors.
The Second Varsity Eight is undefeated (4-0) on the year, having also beaten Bucknell in the season-opener on March 20.
Virginia’s Varsity Eight (coxswain Sidney Thorsten, Jenny Cromwell, Desiree Burns, Bridget Fowler, Augusta Stratos, Lauren Hutchins, Amanda Chase, Marie Long and Victoria Burke) defeated UCLA at the Pac-10 Challenge, while the Varsity Four of coxswain Taylor Gilmore, Megan Hooley, Caroline Sweeny, Marelle Myers and Erin Hawes also defeated the Bruins.
Last year against Ohio State, UVa’s Varsity Eight defeated the Buckeyes by more than 11 seconds with a time of 6:20.4 on the Griggs Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to that victory, Virginia won races in the Varsity Four and Novice Eight.
Ohio State is currently ranked No. 16 by USRowing/CRCA. The Buckeyes also competed in the Pac-10 Challenge last weekend, dropping Varsity Eight races to UCLA, Stanford and California.
The Buckeyes’ Second Varsity Eight defeated UCLA and Stanford but fell to California, while the First Varsity Four defeated UCLA and lost to Stanford and Cal.
The Cavaliers will race at Lake Monticello for two-consecutive weekends, taking on Tennessee and Central Florida on Saturday, April 11. Those races will be broken down into a morning session (9 a.m.) and an afternoon session (1 p.m.).
