LAKE MONTICELLO, Va. No. 7 Virginia rowing won four races against No. 16 Ohio State Saturday at Lake Monticello. The Novice Eight, Second Novice Eight, Third Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four were victorious.
“Ohio State came ready to race and did a good job in winning the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “We will improve over the next few weeks.”
In the novice races, Virginia came away with two victories in the Novice Eight and Second Novice Eight. In the first race of the day, the Second Novice Eight of coxswain Sarah Shanfield, Elspeth Missel, Katherine Stewart, Lauren Becker, Francesca Lauritano, Jenny Shultis, Liza Tullis, Anne Peck and Elizabeth Webb had a winning time of 7:04.6, beating Ohio State’s time of 7:29.4.
UVa’s Novice Eight (Coxswain Chloe Delaney, Carolyn Glandorf, Keziah Beall, Hannah Silver, MacKenzie Leahy, Sarah Borchelt, Morgan Joseph, Ana Tucker and Chelsea Simpson) won its race with a time of 6:53.1. Ohio State’s second-place time in the Novice Eight was 6:59.3.
In the fours, UVa’s First Varsity Four was edged by Ohio State, 7:29.5 to 7:32.0. That Virginia crew was made up of coxswain Taylor Gilmore, Erin Hawes, Cara Linnenkohl, Ruth Retzinger and Megan Hooley.
The Second Varsity Four (coxswain Laura Hendrie, Summers Nelson, Lieve Pitts, Lauren Heimburg and Marelle Myers) and Third Varsity Four (Coxswain Sarah Pichardo, Pamela Baylor, Mariana Lima, Colleen Bauk and Hannah Jenkins) were both victorious. The Second Varsity Four had a winning time of 7:33.5, compared to OSU’s time of 7:53.2, while the Third Varsity’s Four winning time of 7:38.7 defeated the Buckeyes’ time of 8:12.1.
Ohio State’s Second Varsity Eight (6:38.5) was able to get the victory over Virginia’s (coxswain Cristine Candland, Lauren Shook, Claudia Blandford, Martha Kuzzy, Helen Tompkins, Christine Roper, Susie Chalker, Nora Phillips and Shalane Carlson) time of 6:46.7.
In the final race of the day, UVa’s Varsity Eight (coxswain Sidney Thorsten, Jenny Cromwell, Amanda Chase, Desiree Burns, Augusta Stratos, Lauren Hutchins, Bridget Fowler and Victoria Burke) was edged by Ohio State. The Buckeyes’ time of 6:33.4 won the race, followed by Virginia’s time of 6:35.3.
The Cavaliers will race at Lake Monticello again next Saturday (April 11). Virginia takes on Tennessee and Central Florida beginning at 9 a.m.
