Terps Sweep Virginia 5-2 and 5-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia softball team (23-11, 2-6 ACC) was swept by Maryland (18-16, 4-4 ACC) in doubleheader Saturday at The Park. The Terps recorded wins of 5-2 and 5-0 in the first and second game, respectively.

In the first game, redshirt sophomore Nicole Koren tallied her ninth home run of the season.

The Cavaliers were outhit 19-5 in the two games combined and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh twice.

In the second game, Maryland jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after scoring two runs in the first and one in the fourth. The Terps piled on two insurance runs in the sixth and outhit Virginia 12-3.

Koren and Stephanie Coates teamed up to pitch the second game for Virginia. Koren, who took the loss, went the first three innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Coates tossed the final four innings, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out two.

Abby Snyder, Koren and Lauren McCaskey had hits for the Cavaliers.

In game one, Virginia got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third inning. After two strikeouts, sophomore Alison Pittman was hit by a pitch and stole second. The next batter, Giannina Cipolloni, singled to center as Pittman scored on the play.

The Terrapins took a 3-1 lead in the fifth as the Cavaliers committed two errors in the inning. Virginia responded with another run in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2, highlighted by Koren’s solo shot to left field to lead off the inning.

But Maryland had a two-run sixth inning after Breanna Shaw homered to left center to start the stanza and Kathy McLaughlin’s RBI single to left scored Alex Schultz, who also singled in the inning.

Virginia’s Karla Wilburn fell to 17-5 on the year after taking the loss. She pitched all seven innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits. Wilburn also finished with four strikeouts and two walks.

Virginia and Maryland will conclude the series at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Cavaliers will host a free instructional clinic for youth and an autograph session following the game.
