CHAPEL HILL, N.C. The No. 26 Virginia women’s tennis team suffered its sixth consecutive loss to a top-25 team, dropping a close 4-3 decision at No. 18 North Carolina Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The loss drops the Cavaliers’ record to 10-8 overall and 3-6 in the ACC.
The Cavaliers changed their doubles teams and the switch made an immediate impact as Virginia won the doubles point. After the Tar Heels had won at No. 3 doubles, the Cavaliers captured wins at the top two positions. Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) upset No. 61 Katrina Tsang and Austin Smith 8-5 at No. 1 doubles and Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) and Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) downed Laura Reichert and Meg Fanjoy 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, after North Carolina drew even with a win at No. 2, the Cavaliers retook the lead as Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) topped Jelena Durisic 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. The Tar Heels answered with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 to take a 3-2 lead. Virginia evened the match at 3-3 when Bartlett rallied for a three set win over Reichert, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. In the final match on the courts, Fanjoy edged Karoline Steiro (Oslo, Norway) 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 to give the Tar Heels the 4-3 win.
Virginia concludes the regular season next weekend when it hosts Wake Forest and NC State.
