LAKE MONTICELLO, Va. The 13th-ranked Virginia rowing team won 10 of its 12 races on Saturday, including varsity race sweeps of No. 19 Tennessee and Central Florida.

Competing on Lake Monticello for the second-straight weekend, UVa competed against Tennessee in the morning and won three varsity races (Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four).

UVa’s Varsity Eight (coxswain Sidney Thorsten, Jennifer Cromwell, Amanda Chase, Desiree Burns, Augusta Stratos, Lauren Hutchins, Bridget Fowler, Marie Long, Claudia Blandford) defeated the Lady Vols by nearly 10 seconds, clocking in with a time of 6:36.8, compared to Tennessee’s time of 6:46.5.

The Second Varsity Eight of coxswain Cristine Candland, Lauren Shook, Helen Tompkins, Martha Kuzzy, Cara Linnenkohl, Nora Phillips, Susie Chalker, Shalane Carlson and Victoria Burke also was victorious. That crew had a time of 6:38.7, defeating UT’s time of 6:46.5.

The Varsity Four (coxswain Taylor Gilmore, Ruth Retzinger, Megan Hooley, Summers Nelson, Caroline Sweeny), meanwhile, won with a time of 7:44.5 and the Open Four (coxswain Laura Hendrie, Mariana Lima, Lauren Heimburg, Jenn Lampen, Colleen Bauk) won with a time of 7:40.6.

Virginia’s First Novice Eight (coxswain Chloe Delaney, MacKenzie Leahy, Carolyn Glandorf, Morgan Joseph, Hannah Silver, Keziah Beall, Ana Tucker, Chelsea Simpson, Sarah Borchelt) defeated Clemson in its morning race, 6:54.5 to 7:13.3.

The Second Novice Eight (coxswain Miriam Kaplan, Liza Tullis, Elspeth Missel, Elizabeth Webb, Lauren Becker, Francesca Lauritano, Jenny Shultis, Katherine Stewart, Asia Echard) rowed against UCF’s First Novice Eight and fell just short, 7:01.0 to 6:53.5.

In between sessions, head coach Kevin Sauer and the entire Virginia rowing program welcomed back Melanie Kok (Class of 2007). Kok rowed with the Canadian lightweight double that won the bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

Kok was in attendance for the dedication of the Varsity Eight boat. The boat has been named after Kok and former teammate Lindsay Shoop (Class of 2004). Shoop won the gold medal with the United States women’s eight at the Beijing Olympics.

“It is a pleasure and an honor to name our brand-new eight boat for Melanie Kok and her former teammate Lindsay Shoop,” Sauer said. “Melanie was an unbelievable rower and captain. She represented work and grit and showed that again as a bronze medalist for the Canadian lightweight double.”

“I left Virginia a better rower for sure,” Kok said. “But thanks to my coaches and teammates I also left a better person. So thank you.”

The Virginia rowing senior class of Taylor Gilmore, Mariana Lima, Bridget Fowler, Amanda Chase, Augusta Stratos and Victoria Burke was also honored in a ceremony in between sessions.

In the afternoon session, Virginia again rowed to three victories in the varsity races. The Varsity Eight defeated UCF, 6:36.5 to 6:49.8, while the Second Varsity Eight was victorious, 6:48.6 to 6:58.8.

“It’s good to pick up a couple of wins,” Sauer said. “We’ll keep moving forward from here on out.”

The Varsity Four (coxswain Sarah Pichardo, Ruth Retzinger, Megan Hooley, Summers Nelson, Caroline Sweeny) had a time of 7:32.9, beating UCF’s time of 7:39.1.

In the Open Four, Virginia’s crew of coxswain Taylor Gilmore, Hannah Jenkins, Lauren Heimburg, Lieve Pitts and Jenn Lampen had the winning time of 7:42.6.

“It was good to see progress,” associate head coach Steve Pritzker said. “We’ll continue to strive to make improvements each day going forward.”

The Virginia First Novice Eight win its second race of the day with a time of 6:47.5, while the Second Novice Eight of coxswain Caroline Moyer, Liza Tullis, Elspeth Missel, Elizabeth Webb, Lauren Becker, Francesca Lauritano, Jenny Shultis, Felicity Fisk and Anne Peck was edged by Clemson’s First Novice Eight, 7:10.1 to 7:06.7.

“We had some great races today,” novices coach Sarah Cannon said. “The top novice crew won some good fights, and our second novice crew held its own against top novice boats from other programs. We are excited about what the future holds.”

Virginia now turns its focus to the ACC Championship, being held Monday, April 20, in Oak Ridge, Tenn. UVa will look to extend its school record nine-straight conference crowns.
