CHARLOTTESVILLE, VAVirginia men’s lacrosse players Garrett Billings, Shamel Bratton, Danny Glading and Mike Timms are among 21 players announced today as nominees for the 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy by the Tewaaraton Foundation. The Tewaaraton Trophy is presented annually to the top collegiate player.

Billings, a senior attackman from Langley, British Columbia, has been among the nation’s leading scorers all season. He is currently eighth with 44 points, while his 29 goals are tied for 12th. He has led the team in goals on three occasions this season. He tied the school record with eight goals against Stony Brook in the third game of the season. He is tied with Chase Monroe for sixth in Virginia history with 116 career goals.

Glading, a senior from Bethesda, Md., has been a starter on attack from day one for head coach Dom Starsia. He leads the team in total points (45) and assists (23), and ranks third in goals (22). He is currently sixth in the country in assists and seventh in total points. His 205 career points rank ninth in program history, while his 96 assists are eighth. Glading needs just four assists to become the second player in school history and the sixth in Atlantic Coast Conference history to record at least 100 career goals and 100 career assists.

Bratton, a midfielder from Huntington Station, N.Y., has made a big move as a sophomore this season for the Cavaliers. The youngest middie among the nominees, he has scored 21 goals, seven more than last season, and ranks sixth among all midfielders. His 29 total points are tied for 11th among middies. Bratton has been named the ACC Player of the Week twice this season and led the team in goals on four occasions.

Timms, a graduate student from Virginia Beach, Va., is the only defenseman (not including goalies) placed on the list of nominees. The most dominant longstick midfielder in the country this season, he has been the team’s most outstanding player this season according to Starsia. He has shutdown virtually every midfielder he has been matched against this season. His 50 ground balls and 29 caused turnovers are tops among ACC defensive players this season.

A list of five finalists for the award will be announced later this spring. The ninth annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at the University Club of Washington, D.C. For more information on the Tewaaraton Trophy, go to www.tewaaraton.com.
