Virginia Golf Team Readies for ACC Championships

Charlottesville, VA The Virginia men’s golf team will play in the 56th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship April 17-19 at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C. This marks the eighth consecutive year the tournament has been contested at the Old North State Club. The 54-hole event will start at 8:30 a.m. each morning.

Virginia is paired with Boston College during Friday’s opening round. Virginia’s lineup includes Kyle Stough, Will Collins, Conrad Von Borsig, Bruce Woodall and Ben Kohles. Collins leads the Cavaliers with a 72.62 stroke average while Kohles is second at 72.81 and Stough is third at 73.39. Woodall’s average is 73.78 and Von Borsig figures at 73.83.

Last year the Cavaliers placed ninth overall with a team score of 868. Virginia posted rounds of 294, 287 and 287. Florida State won the team title at 838. Wake Forest’s Webb Simpson took medalist honors at 14-under 202. Collins was UVa’s top finisher in 26th place at 1-over 217.

A total of seven conference teams enter this weekend’s championship ranked in the top-50 of the latest Golfstat standings. Clemson tops that list in third place while Georgia Tech is 10th, NC State is ranked 15th, Florida State is No. 22, Wake Forest is No. 29, Virginia is No. 44 and Duke is No. 45.

Wake Forest has won the tournament 18 times, the most of any ACC school. Virginia has never won the event but was the runner-up in 1958 and 1996. Pete Arend became the only Cavalier to win the individual title at the 1955 championship.

ACC Select will broadcast a free webcast of the championship with coverage of the No. 17 and No. 18 holes. The broadcast is slated to begin at approximately 2 p.m. during Saturday and Sunday’s rounds.
