CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia athletics department invites all members of the Cavalier community to Shoot Out For Cancer, a fundraiser for pediatric cancer research, on Sunday, April 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Mad Bowl (corner of Rugby Road and University Avenue).
Virginia’s Student-Athlete Mentors (SAMs), a group established to address the unique concerns of student-athletes ranging from community involvement to drug and alcohol abuse, will be in attendance to help raise money and awareness for cancer research.
“This event has grown significantly in the past few years, and it really is a great chance for student-athletes and members of the community to interact and have a fun-filled day together,” said Ryan Hurley, a senior on the men’s swimming team who is in the SAMs program. “We are expecting members of every sports team that will not be competing on Sunday to be at the event, both helping out and playing games with the kids. All of the kids and families have enjoyed the event in the past, and we are looking to have an even bigger and better Shoot Out for Cancer this year.”
Kids and student-athletes can play games, jump on moon bounces, run through a real obstacle course, get autographs, and both kids and adults can fill up on lunch catered by some of Charlottesville’s most popular restaurants. There will also be a silent auction of collectible UVa and other sports memorabilia.
Tickets are $5, available at the door. Proceeds go to the UVa Cancer Center. Donations are also welcome.
