New London, NC The Virginia men’s golf team is in ninth place after the opening round of the ACC Championships at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The Cavaliers shot 3-over 291 and are one shot behind No. 39 Duke and four strokes ahead of No. 27 Wake Forest in the tightly-packed middle portion of the field.
The first round lead was held by No. 9 Georgia Tech which shot 7-under 281, one shot better than No. 18 NC State. No. 3 Clemson is in third place at 286.
Virginia was led during the opening round by a trio of even par finishes from Bruce Woodall, Kyle Stough and Conrad Von Borsig. All three players managed a birdie on the 18th hole to finish their rounds with a 72. They enter Saturday’s second round tied for 17th place. Ben Kohles shot 75 and is 36th while Will Collins suffered through an unusually poor round, finishing 55th at 83.
Georgia Tech’s Cameron Tringale and Virginia Tech’s Drew Weaver both shot 5-under 67 to finish the first round tied for first place.
The tournament continues Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
ACC Select will broadcast a free webcast of the championship with coverage of the No. 17 and No. 18 holes. The broadcast is slated to begin at approximately 2 p.m. during Saturday and Sunday’s rounds.
