Cavaliers Host No. 1 Northwestern on Senior Day

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The No. 10 Virginia women’s lacrosse team hosts No. 1 Northwestern in its regular-season finale at Klckner Stadium on Sunday at noon. Live stats for the contest will be available on VirginiaSports.com, while live video can be found on ACCSelect.com or it can be heard on the radio, as WINA AM 1070 will broadcast the game live.

Prior to the start of the contest, Virginia’s nine seniors will be recognized. A class hailing from five states, Catherine Chambers, Sarah Hackman, Whit Hagerman, Sara Hairfield, Jenny Hauser, Jen Holden, Ashley McCulloch, Katie Shannon and Blair Weymouth, have accumulated a four-year record of 58-17, including an unblemished 7-0 record in ACC Tournament games for three-straight conference titles.

This season, the Cavaliers hold a 10-5 overall record and are led by Weymouth’s 44 goals and 59 points, while McCulloch has dished out a team-best 29 assists to become just the fourth Cavalier in program history to reach the 100-assists plateau.

Junior Kaitlin Duff leads the midfield with 36 ground balls and ranks fourth nationally with 37 caused turnovers, while junior Brittany Kalkstein has won 57 draw controls ranking third nationally.

Northwestern holds a 13-0 record prior to the weekend, but will face John’s Hopkins Friday night before visiting Charlottesville. Hannah Nielson leads the Wildcats with 43 goals and 46 assists for a nation-best 89 points, while Hilary Bowen is ranked sixth nationally with 48 goals this year.

In goal, Morgan Lathrop is ranked second nationally in allowing just 5.12 goals per game. She is stopping .573 percent of shots faced.

In the all-time series, Virginia holds the edge over Northwestern, 5-3. The last two meetings were in the finals of the NCAA Championships, with Northwestern taking both games. But in Charlottesville, the Cavaliers are 2-0.

Following the contest, the Cavaliers will begin their postseason quest for a fourth-straight ACC Championship. The conference tournament will be held at Virginia Tech this Thursday-Sunday.
