CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (25-15, 2-10 ACC) was topped by No. 21 Georgia Tech (33-11, 10-3 ACC) 14-1 and 13-4 in a doubleheader held Saturday at The Park. UVa’s three seniors – Casey Steffan, Karla Wilburn and Carly Winger – were honored prior to the game.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets racked up 13 hits. Virginia finished the contest with five hits from five different Cavaliers, including a double by Sarah Tacke and a triple from Giannina Cipolloni.
UVa scored its lone run in the bottom of the third. With one out, Winger beat out an infield single to the shortstop. She later scored on Cipolloni’s two-out triple down the right field line.
In the second game, Georgia Tech came out strong with seven runs in the top half of the first, and finished the contest with 14 hits.
Winger had two of Virginia’s three hits, including a single and a double. Lauren McCaskey also had a double in game two.
The Cavaliers put three runs on the board in the third inning. McCaskey led off the stanza with a double to left center. She moved over to third after a Cynthia Javaras groundout to the right side. After Alison Pittman was hit by a pitch, she stole second and catcher Jessica Weaver’s throw went into center field as McCaskey crossed home. Clara Kendall and Cipolloni then walked to load the bases. A Georgia Tech error on a pop fly to first scored both Pittman and Kendall, who with two outs in the inning, were running on the play.
Virginia added another run in the fourth. With two outs, Pittman reached on an error. The next batter, Winger, doubled to right center to score Pittman from first.
Georgia Tech and Virginia will conclude the series at 1 p.m. Sunday. It will mark the final home game of the season for the Cavaliers.
