Charlottesville, VA — The Virginia football team held its annual Spring Football Festival Saturday at Scott Stadium before a crowd of approximately 8,000 fans. Using a scrimmage format that pitted the offense against the defense, the Cavaliers ran off 110 plays in addition to giving the punting and field goals teams several opportunities.
Debuting a new no huddle offense, the Cavalier offense threw the ball 53 times and mixed in 57 running plays. Marc Verica, the starting quarterback for the nine games in 2008, completed 14 of 19 throws for 148 yards, including a 21-yard yard TD toss to Raynard Horne.
The only other score by the offense came on a 48-yard run by tailback Mikell Simpson. He led all rushers with 64 yards.
Vic Hall, who started at quarterback in the 2008 finale at Virginia Tech, was the first signal caller on the field with the offense. He completed 11 of 16 passes for 98 yards. Jamell Sewell, who did not play last year while not enrolled at the University, managed 61 yards while completing seven of 11 throws.
The Cavalier quarterbacks wore orange jerseys during the scrimmage and were not allowed to be tackled.
Matt Snyder and Javaris Brown led the offensive players with five pass receptions. Snyder had a game-high 55 receiving yards.
Bill Schautz led the defense with 12 tackles while Darnell Carter had seven. Rodney McLeod and Mike Parker both managed to intercept passes.
The Cavaliers open the 2009 season Sept. 5 in Scott Stadium against William & Mary.
