CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (25-17, 2-12 ACC) was swept by No. 21 Georgia Tech (35-11, 12-3 ACC) after the Yellow Jackets rallied to defeat the Cavaliers 5-3 in the final game of the series Sunday at The Park. Sarah Tacke hit her 11th home run of the season in the contest.
All four Virginia pitchers saw action in the game. Senior Karla Wilburn made the start and threw six innings in two separate appearances. The Del Mar, Calif., native allowed four runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits. She also finished with four strikeouts and no walks in her final game at The Park.
Sophomore Allison Rife took the loss after giving up what proved to be the game-winning hit in the sixth inning. Scottsville, Va., native Danielle Dike doubled to center field as Whitney Haller scored the go-ahead run.
GT’s Jessica Coan picked up the win after tossing the final five innings of the game, allowing no runs on just one hit with six strikeouts.
The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the second when Tacke homered to right center to lead off the inning. In the third, Virginia went up 3-0 after adding two more runs. Alison Pittman singled to left and stole second to start the stanza. Carly Winger then hit an infield single and Clara Kendall beat out a bunt to load the bases Giannina Cipolloni then singled to left to score Pittman and Abby Snyder walked to score Winger.
Georgia Tech retired the next three batters and Virginia left the bases loaded.
The Yellow Jacets rallied to score four runs in the sixth, in part to back-to-back Virginia errors to start the inning.
Virginia will play its final conference series of the year Saturday at Florida State.
