CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia volleyball head coach Lee Maes has announced the signing of Rachel Gray to a National Letter of Intent and will join the Cavaliers in the fall.
Gray, a native of Shawnee, Kan., was the runner-up for the 2009 Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year. A setter from St. James Academy, Gray was also honored as a Prepvolleyball.com All-American and was named first-team all-state as a senior, in addition to her second-team all-state recognition as a junior.
Gray led St. James Academy to the 2008 Kansas 4A state championship and finished the season ranked fourth in the nation. She was a two-time member of the all-state tournament team and holds the school record for career assists.
“Rachel will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact in our program,” Maes said. “She is one of the top setting prospects in the country, evident by her wonderful athleticism and her ability to dynamically distribute the ball with touch and command. She brings to our team a very competitive mentality and a great work ethic. Anyone who has coached Rachel or played with her can attest that her achievements and accomplishments have been an embodiment of what ‘blue-collar’ truly means – achieving success through the merits of hard work and dependability. She has a cultivating presence on and off the court that our team will embrace. We are delighted to add her to our fabulous 2009 recruiting class.”
Gray will join Tobi Farrar (Arlington, Texas) and Jessica O’Shoney (Austin, Texas), who have already signed NLIs to join the Cavaliers for the 2009 season.
