CHARLOTTESVILLEThe NCAA is honoring five of Virginia’s intercollegiate athletics teams with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. The teams are women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming and diving, women’s indoor track and volleyball. The teams earned the awards by posting multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all teams in their respective sports. The NCAA is honoring more than 700 Division I teams for the achievement.
“We congratulate these teams on their academic achievement,” said Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage. “As we’ve said before, the fact that we value outstanding academic performance is evident in our athletics department mission statement and 10-year goals. We appreciate the academic work done by the student-athletes on these teams, and the support provided by their coaching staffs and the department’s academic affairs staff. Their combined efforts have led to the recognition the teams have earned for themselves, the athletics department and the University.”
The public recognition awards are part of the NCAA’s academic reform program. The 767 teams recognized this year represent 205 of the 331 Division I colleges and universities. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
The list of teams recognized this year includes 448 women’s teams and 319 men’s or mixed squads.
Multi-year APR scores for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition awards, will be announced May 6.
