PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The men’s and women’s championship discus competition highlighted day two of the Penn Relays for the Virginia track and field teams on Friday, with seniors Yemi Ayeni and Caitlin Kelly winning titles in their respective events.

Ayeni, a two-time All-American, defended his championship from last season, throwing 194’ 8” to outdistance Michael Kelly of Florida State’s runner-up toss of 187’8”, while Kelly, competing in her first-ever Penn Relays, won with a personal-best toss of 171’ 10” the third longest in Virginia’s all-time history.

“This is my first time at the Penn Relays,” Kelly said. “We had ACCs last weekend, so that was good for mental and physical preparation.

“The competition was good, obviously in a big meet like this. It was good to get in with a new mix of people.”

Senior All-American Billie-Jo Grant finished runner-up behind Kelly, throwing 166’10” and classmate Amy Bilmanis finished seventh with a mark of 151’ 0”,

In the college division of the men’s distance medley relay, the Cavaliers’ quartet of freshman All-Americans Sintayehu Taye and Lance Roller, sophomore Andrew Lobb and junior Steve Finley combined for a first-place finish in 9:43.59.

The men’s 4x400m relay team of freshman Kevin Anding, sophomore Adams Abdulrazaaq, junior All-American Brian Lee and sophomore All-American Meikle Paschal finished in 3:14.16.

The Cavaliers will conclude the Relays tomorrow.
