UVa Golfers Look for Three-Peat at Cavalier Classic

Charlottesville, VA The Virginia men’s golf team wraps up the 2009 regular season when it plays host to the 22nd annual Cavalier Classic at the par-72, 6,879-yard Birdwood Golf Course April 25 and 26. The Cavaliers will attempt to win their third straight title after posting back-to-back wins in 2007 and 2008. The 36-hole tournament will feature 18 holes of competition on Saturday and Sunday. Both rounds will begin at 8 a.m. from the first tee.

The 18-team field for this year’s tournament includes Akron, Appalachian State, Augusta State, East Carolina, Francis Marion, George Mason, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Maryland, Radford, Rutgers, Seton Hall, South Carolina, Towson, UNC Wilmington and Villanova. Three individuals will compete from NC State.

The Cavaliers are scheduled to begin play Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and will be paired with South Carolina and Augusta State.

Virginia won last year’s tournament by three shots at 1-under 575. Augusta State was second at 578. The Panthers’ Henrik Norlander took medalist honors at 5-under 139, including a 4-under 68 during the final round. UVa’s Greg Carlin and NC State’s Brad Revell tied for second at 140. Two years ago the Cavaliers ran away with the championship, shooting 868. UNCG was second at 892.

Last season’s win marked the sixth time Virginia has won the tournament. The Cavaliers also took home the championship trophy in 2007, 1997, 1995, 1990 and 1988.

There is no live scoring for this event. Results will be posted on VirginiaSports.com after each round.
