Charlottesville, VA — The Virginia men’s golf team is second place after the opening round of play at its own Cavalier Classic taking place at Birdwood Golf Course. The Cavaliers shot 4-over 292 and trail only No. 13 South Carolina in the field of 18 teams. The Gamecocks shot 2-under 286 to hold a six-stroke advantage over Virginia heading into Sunday’s final round.
Virginia was led by the 3-under 69 of Kyle Stough, who is in third place overall. UVa’s Ben Kohles shot 73 and is 21st, Steven Rojas carded a 74 to stand 28th while Will Collins finished the opening round with a 76 to put him in 46th place and Conrad Von Borsig is 67th at 78.
The Cavaliers have three individuals competing in the tournament that do not count toward the team score. Leading that group was Amory Davis who shot 4-under 32 on the back nine to finish fourth overall at 70. Bruce Woodall carded a 71 and is in ninth place while Cole Willcox finished 46th with a 76.
UNC Wilmington’s Josh Brock leads the field at 5-under 67. He had six birdies during his round and did not record a bogey until the 18th hole.
South Carolina was led by George Bryan IV’s 2-under 70. Three of his teammates shot even par 72 to help the Gamecocks to the first-round lead.
The final round of the Cavalier Classic starts at 8 a.m. at Birdwood Golf Course. The Cavaliers are scheduled to tee off at 12:30 p.m.
