TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Virginia softball team (25-20, 2-15 ACC) fell to 18th-ranked Florida State 5-1 Sunday in the regular season finale at JoAnne Graf Field.
Florida State (38-13, 14-4) outhit the Cavaliers 10-2 in the contest. Senior Carly Winger and junior Abby Snyder both registered singles for Virginia.
After two scoreless innings, the Seminoles took a 2-0 lead in the third before tacking on another run in the fourth. With two more runs in the fifth, thanks to a Michelle Snyder RBI single to right, FSU took a 5-0 advantage.
Virginia scored its lone run of the game in the top half of the sixth. With one out, Winger walked. On her steal to second, the throw from Florida State’s Kaleigh Rafter ricocheted off Winger’s foot as she was sliding, and rolled all the way into left center. Winger was able to score on the play.
Senior Karla Wilburn took the loss in the circle, tossing a complete game and allowing four earned runs. Sarah Hamilton earned the win after 6 1/3 innings pitched. She finished with 11 strikeouts. Lauren Varsalona came on in the seventh to throw the final 2/3 innings.
The Cavaliers have completed regular season play and will be in the No. 8 seed in the 2009 ACC Championship, which begins Friday, May 8 in Raleigh, N.C. Virginia will play the No. 1 seed at 5 p.m. Conference play finishes up next week as UVa has a bye week to take final exams.
