CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team received an at large berth to the 2009 NCAA Tournament and will travel to a regional in Durham, N.C. The Cavaliers will play VCU in a first round match, while host Duke plays Richmond.
The selection is Virginia’s third in the past four years. In 2006 and 2007 the Cavaliers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2006, Virginia defeated Alabama in the first round at Duke before falling to the Blue Devils in the second round. In 2007, the Cavaliers topped VCU in the first round at Clemson before falling to the Tigers in the second round.
The Cavaliers are 13-9 this season and are ranked No. 27. VCU received an at-large bid after an 18-9 season and currently ranked No. 45. The third-seeded Blue Devils (23-3) are the ACC Champions, while Richmond (17-5) won the Atlantic 10.
The regional will take place either Friday-Saturday, May 8-9 or Saturday-Sunday, May 9-10. Dates and times will be announced later.
