Four Cavaliers Earn NCAA Individual Championship Bids

CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia men’s tennis team had four individuals selected to compete in the 2009 NCAA Individual Championships, to be held May 20-25 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center at Texas A&M University. Dominic Inglot (London, England), Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) received selections to the 64-player singles field, while the teams of Inglot-Shabaz and Singh-Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) were selected to the 32-team doubles field.

The three players in the singles field ties the Virginia school record set in 2005 and matched last season. This year marks the first time the Cavaliers have sent two teams to the doubles championship.

Inglot is a 9-16 seed in the tournament for the second consecutive season. He fell in the first round last year in a third-set tiebreaker to Justin Kronauge of Ohio State in his NCAA Singles Championship debut. This year he has a 23-12 singles record and is currently ranked No. 14 nationally.

Shabaz is making his first NCAA singles appearance. This season he went 34-8 in singles play and is currently ranked No. 27 nationally.

Singh is also making his first NCAA singles appearance. He went 35-5 in singles play this season and he is currently ranked No. 26 nationally.

The team of Inglot and Shabaz is making its first NCAA doubles appearance. They have posted a 33-7 record this season and are currently ranked No. 12 nationally.

The team of Barrick and Singh is also making its NCAA doubles debut. The team has an overall record of 37-7 and is ranked No. 13 nationally.

Virginia, the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Team Championship, opens play May 8-9 as it hosts first and second action at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers (29-0) meet Navy in the first round, with South Carolina and North Carolina also competing in the Charlottesville Regional.
