CHARLOTTESVILLE — Past, current and future members of the Virginia men’s tennis team have spent the summer competing in a wide variety of competitions around the world. The Cavalier program has been represented in professional events, the World University Games, Davis Cup and World Team Tennis.

Dominic Inglot (Class of 2009) represented his home nation of Great Britian earlier this month at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. Inglot won a pair of medals at the competition, winning silver in men’s doubles and bronze in mixed doubles.

Somdev Devvarman (Class of 2008) has reached a career-high No. 129 in the ATP singles and No. 355 in the ATP doubles rankings this summer. Last week he reached the final of the Kennedy Funding Invitational, a charity tournament outside New York City, for the third consecutive year. He topped Todd Widom and Wayne Odesnik in the first two rounds before falling to John Isner in the final. Rising junior Michael Shabaz also competed in the tournament.

Treat Huey (Class of 2008) helped the Philippines defeat Pakistan in Davis Cup action last week. He won his singles and doubles match in the tie. Earlier this summer, he won a doubles title on the USTA Futures Circuit in Sacramento, Calif.

Rylan Rizza (Class of 2006) has won five doubles titles on the Futures Tour this year, including two in the last month in Europe. He is currently ranked a career-high No. 323 in the world in doubles. Teddy Angelinos (Class of 2008) has also been playing on the Futures Tour.

Julen Uriguen, who will be first-year this upcoming year, also competed in Davis Cup, leading Guatemala to a 3-2 win over the Bahamas last week. Uriguen competed in the final match, with the score tie 2-2, and defeated Marvin Rolle 6-7, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 8-6 to give Guatemala the victory.

Another incoming first-year, Jarmere Jenkins, has competed in numerous events on the USTA Futures Circuit and has also competed for the New York Buzz in World Team Tennis.

Santiago Villegas, who will begin his Cavalier career this season, won a round in qualifying in a challenger in his native Colombia. He topped David Guimaraes 6-2, 6-3 in round one before falling to Alejandro Fabbri, ranked No. 352 in the world, 6-2, 7-6(8) in the second round.

Current players Sanam Singh and Drew Courtney have been playing open tournaments throughout the state during the summer.

Associate Head Coach Tony Bresky, the 2009 ITA Mideast Region Assistant Coach of the Year, has been coaching the USTA Summer Collegiate Team. The program is an elite training program for top American collegiate players that allows them to compete in a team-oriented environment on the USTA Futures Circuit.
