Asque Named to Preseason All-ACC Volleyball Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior outside hitter Simone Asque has been selected to the 2010 Preseason All-ACC Team and the Virginia volleyball team has been picked to finish seventh in the annual Atlantic Coast Conference preseason poll, the league announced Tuesday.
Asque is making her second-straight appearance on the conference’s preseason team. An All-ACC team honoree a year ago, Asque enters the 2010 season ranked sixth on Virginia’s career records for kills per set, averaging 3.31. She landed a team-best 416 kills last year and ranked third in the ACC with 3.75 kills per set. A back-to-back ACC Player of the Week in 2009, Asque collected Texas A&M All-Tournament Team and VaSID All-State first team honors throughout that year, and was also named to the ACC All-Freshman Team in 2008.
Virginia picked up 70 points in the annual preseason poll, as the coaches predicted the Cavaliers would finish one point behind Clemson (71) who was sixth, and ahead of Virginia Tech (55), Maryland (40), Wake Forest (38), NC State (20) and Boston College (12).
Florida State and Duke both picked up 108 of the possible 121 points to tie for the first-place ranking. Florida State earned five first-place votes, while Duke earned four. Georgia Tech took a close third, picking up 103 points and earning three first-place votes, while Miami (92) and North Carolina (75) were picked fourth and fifth, respectively.
Virginia will open its season with the Temple Invitational on Aug. 27-28. The Cavaliers will face Valparaiso, Delaware and Temple before returning home to host the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup on Sept. 4-5.
