LaPierre Drafted No. 2 Overall in the 2013 MLL Draft by Hamilton

PHILADELPHIA – Virginia senior midfielder Chris LaPierre was selected No. 2 overall in the 2013 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft by the Hamilton Nationals. LaPierre’s name was called from the podium Friday night inside the Liberty Ballroom at the Philadelphia Marriott. Matt White was the only other Cavalier selected in the draft, going in the fourth round at No. 28 overall to the Charlotte Hounds.
LaPierre becomes the 16th Cavalier drafted in the first round all-time. Syracuse also saw Brian Megill taken with the No. 7 overall pick by the Denver Outlaws, which means that UVa and the Orange remain tied for the most first round picks all-time among all schools. The MLL Draft started in 2002 and UVa has had at least one first round selection in every draft except for the 2008 draft.
LaPierre (Medford, N.J.) is a two-time All-ACC honoree and the USILA has named the defensive midfielder a third-team All-American in 2011 and a second-team All-American in 2012. LaPierre is a solo captain for 2013, the first time that has happened at UVa since 1981.
LaPierre becomes the second Cavalier in back-to-back seasons to be the No. 2 overall pick. Former Tewaaraton Trophy winner Steele Stanwick was the No. 2 overall by the Ohio Machine in 2012.
White (Ridgefield, Conn.) has seen time at attack and midfield during his career. White owns 36 career starts and boasts 91 career points (55 goals and 36 assists). He made the 2011 NCAA all-tournament team when he tallied eight goals and three assists, including the epic game-winner in overtime against Bucknell in the NCAA First Round.
The New York Lizards in the 2012 draft selected senior Charlie Streep, who transferred to Virginia from Bucknell in the fall. The Lizards retain the rights to Streep after taking him in the seventh round and No. 52 overall. Streep missed 2012 with the Bison because of an injury and came to UVa for graduate school to utilize his final year of eligibility.
