CHARLOTTESVILLE – After a strong week on the professional tennis tour, two former Virginia men’s tennis players reached career-high ATP rankings this week. Jarmere Jenkins (Class of 2013) climbed to No. 386 in singles and No. 371 in doubles, while Dominic Inglot (Class of 2009) climbed to No. 30 in doubles.
Jenkins had a strong performance at the Sacramento Challenger last week. A wild card entry in singles, he topped former Tennessee standout John-Patrick Smith in the first round, 6-3, 6-1. After edging world No. 156 Daniel Evans 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round, Jenkins posted the highest ranked win of his career in the quarterfinals, downing world No. 114 Matthew Ebden 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4. His run came to an end in the semifinals, falling to eventual champion Donald Young. Jenkins’ 156-place improvement from last week made him the biggest mover in the top 700 of this week’s ATP singles rankings.
Jenkins teamed with Young in the doubles draw in Sacramento and the pair reached the final. Playing in his first ATP Challenger Tour final, Jenkins was denied a title as he and Young were edged by Matt Reid and Smith 6-7(1), 6-4, 14-12.
This week, Jenkins is playing the Tiburon Challenger and rallied for a first round win over fourth-seeded Alex Kuznetsov. He trailed by a set and 5-1, but came back for a 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Inglot moved up two spots in the ATP Doubles Rankings this week to crack the top 30 for the first time in his career. He teamed with Treat Huey (Class of 2008) to reach the semifinals of the ATP500 Japan Open last week.
Somdev Devvarman (Class of 2008) continued his climb up the rankings, up to No. 95 this week’s singles rankings. Ted Angelinos (Class of 2008) had a successful past week as well, making the singles final of the Futures Tour event in his native Greece.
