CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs picked up three wins as action concluded in a quad meet with Penn State, Texas and West Virginia Saturday (Nov. 9) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
Virginia’s women, ranked 18th nationally, defeated No. 25 Penn State (226-127) and West Virginia (288-50), but fell to No. 6 Texas (196-157) and are now 4-1 on the season. The No. 24 Cavalier men took down the Mountaineers (241-111), but were defeated by No. 4 Texas (225-128) and No. 20 Nittany Lions (191-162) to move to 2-2 on the season.
“We were all over the place with results this weekend, but had more good than bad,” UVa head coach Augie Busch said. “The only real frustrating thing was that we lost so many close races. We have to be tougher when it comes to finishing races, but I think we will be in a couple weeks (at Ohio State) with a little more rest.”
The women’s 200 medley relay team of sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.), freshman Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany), junior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) and senior Emily Lloyd (Severna Park, Md.) kicked off the day with a win in 1:41.20, the 11th-quickest mark in the country this season.
Freshman Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) claimed the 1,000 free in a time of 9:42.00, the fifth-fastest time on UVa’s all-time list and fourth-fastest mark in the country so far this season. Smith also placed third in the 200 free in 1:48.04.
Simon touched first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.59, eighth on the Cavaliers’ all-time list and 13th-fastest in the country this season, while sophomore Natalie Martin (Haymarket, Va.) was third in 2:19.59.
Bartholomew won the 100 backstroke in a time of 53.43, while Williamson was second in 54.78. Williamson picked up a win in the 100 butterfly in 54.48.
In the 400 IM, junior Shaun Casey (Port Orange, Fla.) placed third in 4:17.79, the 14th-fastest mark in the country this season. The 400 free relay team of Smith, freshman Ellen Thomas (Guildford, United Kingdom), senior Rachel Naurath (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) and Lloyd touched third in 3:24.22.
On the men’s side, senior Taylor Grey (Williston, Vt.) placed second in the 200 breast in 2:01.00, followed closely by sophomore Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) in third with 2:01.04. Those times rank 17th and 18th in the country this season.
In the 100 fly, senior Parker Camp (Brentwood, Tenn.) placed third in 49.37. Fellow seniors Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) touched fourth and fifth in the 1,000 free in 9:12.48 and 9:20.46, respectively. Daniec’s time ranks 17th in the country this season.
Junior David Ingraham (Spartanburg, S.C.) placed third in the 400 IM in 3:56.31.
Texas’ men defeated WVU (259-93) and PSU (185-168), while the Longhorn women took down the Mountaineers (297-41) and the Nittany Lions (242-111).
The Cavaliers return to action Nov. 22-24 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the Ohio State Invitational, which will feature Virginia, Florida, Kentucky, Purdue, as well as the host Buckeyes.
