Second-Ranked Virginia Downs Loyola Marymount 6-1

LOS ANGELES – The second-ranked Virginia men’s tennis continued its trip to California Friday with a 6-1 victory over Loyola Marymount at the LMU Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improved to 10-2 this season with the win, while the Lions, whose assistant coach is former UVa All-American Rylan Rizza, fell to 4-4 on the year.

The Cavaliers began the match by winning the doubles point. Jordan Daigle (Lafayette, La.) and Alex Scheinman (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted an 8-4 win at No. 3 over Cristobal Rivera and Luke Bohuslav. J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Jonathan Cornish (London, England) clinched the opening point with their 8-5 win at No. 2 over David Doehring and Daniel Simko. At No. 1 doubles, LMU’s Sebastian Bustamante and Todd Volmari edged Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) and Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.) in a tiebreaker, 8-7(4).

Virginia extended the lead to 2-0 as Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Volmari at No. 2 singles. Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) made the score 3-0 with his 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 over Doehring. Corinteli clinched the Cavalier win with his 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Othar Kordsachia. Cornish added a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Bohuslav and Aragone topped Rivera 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 to extend the lead to 6-0. In the final match on the courts, Bustamante topped Richmond in three sets to give the Lions’ their lone point of the day.

This weekend a pair of Cavaliers, first-years Aragone and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.), will compete at the USTA Futures Circuit event in Bakersfield, Calif. Virginia returns to action as a team on March 21 as they visit North Carolina.
