No. 9 Virginia Records 5-2 Win Over No. 15 Clemson

CHARLOTTESVILLE – No. 9 Virginia completed its two-match sweep during Senior Weekend and stretched its winning streak to six matches with a 5-2 win over No. 15 Clemson in Atlantic Coast Conference women’s tennis action on Sunday (April 6) at Snyder Tennis Center.
Virginia improved its record to 15-4 overall and 9-1 ACC, while Clemson dropped to 17-4, 9-1.
The Cavaliers won the doubles point and received singles wins from Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.), Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) and Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.).
Virginia claimed the competitive doubles point with wins at Nos. 3 and 2. Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) beat Yuilynn Miao and Jessy Rompies 8-4 on court three. Clemson’s Yana Koroleva and Beatrice Gumulya beat No. 9 Elbaba and Pierson on court one before Nauta and Li Xi (Kunming, China) clinched the point with an 8-7 win, including a 7-3 score in the tiebreaker, over No. 78 Tristen Dewar and Romy Koelzer on court two.
Rompies tied the score at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Epstein on court five. No. 3 Elbaba posted an impressive 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 46 Koroleva on court one and Virginia gained a 3-1 lead on No. 50 Pierson’s 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 93 Dewar on court four.
Nauta clinched the win with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over No. 111 Gumulya on court three.
No. 64 Koelzer beat No. 33 Collins 7-6(5), 7-5 on court two and Peretz made the final score 5-2 with a 7-6(4), 6-2 win on court six.
Seniors Marjorie Baker (Washington, D.C.), Clare Spooner (Williamsburg, Va.), Peretz and Xi were honored in a pre-match ceremony.
Virginia continues ACC action at North Carolina State and Wake Forest on April 12-13.
