CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 16 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (7-6, 1-3 ACC) hosts No. 6 Boston College (10-3, 2-3 ACC) on Thursday, April 10 at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium in the Cavaliers’ final regular-season home game of 2014. The game will be broadcast live on the radio on WINA 1070 AM with Luke Neer calling the action.
The Cavaliers will honor their eight fourth-year student-athletes in a brief pregame ceremony at approximately 6:50 p.m.
Virginia is trying to extend its current win streak to four games after logging back-to-back wins in home games against Old Dominion and American and earning a 13-8 ACC road victory at Notre Dame. Boston College has won its last two games and three of its last four contests.
Virginia holds a 10-2 advantage in the series and is 7-0 against the Eagles in Charlottesville. Boston College won last year’s matchup in Newton, Mass., 10-7, in a game in which the Eagles dominated the draws in the second half, 8-3. BC also won the ground balls, 14-8, including a 7-3 second-half advantage. Virginia hosted the Eagles on Senior Day in 2012, earning a 12-10 victory.
The Eagles have a 10-3 record this season, but they have lost those three games by a combined four points. BC has endured one-point losses to No. 1 North Carolina and No. 2 Maryland and a two-point defeat against No. 3 Syracuse.
Sophomore midfielder Sarah Mannelly is the reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week after totalling eight points on seven goals and one assist last week while leading the Eagles to a pair of victories, including a 13-11 win at No. 8 Duke. Covie Stanwick leads the team with 49 points (28 goals and 21 assists), ranking sixth in the ACC. Mikaela Rix has scored a team-best 35 goals this season, ranking ninth in the ACC. Goalkeeper Emily Mata is seventh in the ACC with a 9.78 goals-against average.
In the last two games, Virginia has outscored opponents 15-2 in the first half, holding both American and Notre Dame to a lone goal in the opening frame. In the last three games, Virginia has outscored opponents 29-7 in the first half. During its current win streak, junior Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) has scored 10 goals (on 14 shots) with an assist. Senior Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) has scored eight goals with two assists. Senior goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.) has saved 57.8 percent of the shots she has faced in the last three games. Junior Casey Bocklet (South Salem, N.Y.) has had three assists in each of the last three games.
Swan and Blue are tied for the team goal-scoring lead at 37. The tandem are currently tied for fifth in the ACC and 30th in the nation in goals per game at 2.85. Swan, who scored three goals on four shots at Notre Dame, leads the team with 50 points, ranking 10th in the ACC with a 3.85 per-game average. Swan had seven draw controls against Notre Dame. She is currently tied for the conference lead in draws and ranks eighth in the country, averaging 5.38 per game.
Blue scored two goals with an assist at Notre Dame, extending her goal-scoring streak to 19 games. Blue has had six straight games of contributing at least two points.
Colgan logged 16 saves against Notre Dame, including 11 in the first half. Colgan is ranked fifth in the nation and leads the ACC in saves per game, averaging 10.0 per contest. Only Stetson’s Caili Guilday has made more saves this year (149) than Colgan (130).
Senior Maddy Keeshan (Greenwich, Ct.) scored her second hat trick of the season at Notre Dame. Keeshan also had five ground balls at Notre Dame and is now tied for the team lead with goalkeeper Liz Colgan with 24.
Junior Daniela Eppler (Baltimore, Md.), who has scored in each of the last two games, netted the game-winner at Notre Dame, the first of her career.
Sophomore Kelly Boyd (Baltimore, Md.) had her first hat trick of the year at Notre Dame. Boyd has scored five goals with two assists since moving into the starting lineup against Old Dominion.
The Cavaliers finish off the regular season with back-to-back ACC road games beginning with a Sunday, April 13 game at No. 2 Maryland. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. Virginia closes out the regular season on Wednesday, April 16 in a 6 p.m. game at Virginia Tech.
