CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team looks for its eighth-consecutive ACC Championship and its 10th title in the past 11 years, as it travels to Cary N.C., for the 2014 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship this weekend at the Cary Tennis Park. After a first-round bye, the top-seeded Cavaliers (20-2, 11-0 ACC) will meet Florida State in the quarterfinals on Friday at 9 a.m.
Eighth-seeded Florida State (18-10, 5-6 ACC) downed ninth-seeded Miami, 4-0, on Thursday to advance to meet the Cavaliers in the quarterfinals. Virginia won the regular season meeting with the Seminoles, 6-1, on March 29 at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
Virginia completed its eighth-consecutive undefeated ACC regular season last week with a victory at Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers have won a conference-record 118 consecutive matches against ACC competition (regular season and postseason), dating back to a 4-3 loss to Duke in the 2006 ACC Tournament final. In each of the past 11 seasons, Virginia has won at least a share of the ACC regular season title.
Since the ACC Championship moved to the team format in 1986, only Duke (11 championships) has won more titles than Virginia (nine). The Cavaliers have a 30-3 record in the event during the Brian Bolandera.
If the Cavaliers advance in the tournament, their semifinal match will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The championship match is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday.
