Brian Boland Named 2013 USOC Tennis Coach of the Year

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Virginia men’s tennis head coach Brian Boland was named the U.S. Olympic Committee’s 2013 National Coach of the Year for tennis, the United States Tennis Association announced Thursday.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Boland. “It is the most prestigious coaching award in the United States. I want to thank the USOC and the USTA for selecting me to receive it. I know that the success we had last year was due to the hard work of so many people within our program, the players, Andres Pedroso and Scott Brown and the entire support staff at Virginia. They truly share in this award.”

Boland, now in his 13th season at Virginia, earned honors for his work coaching the Cavaliers in 2013, guiding them to a 30-0 team record and the school’s first NCAA team championship. Virginia also captured its fifth ITA National Team Indoor Championship in six seasons and its seventh consecutive ACC title. Under Boland’s instruction last year, senior Jarmere Jenkins was an NCAA singles finalist and doubles champion (with teammate Mac Styslinger), was honored as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s National Player of the Year, among other distinctions, and was one of three Cavaliers to be named all-American, with Styslinger and Alex Domijan.

Boland is now eligible for the USOC’s National Coach of the Year award across all sports, which will be presented later this year.
