BERKELEY, Calif. – The Virginia women’s track and field team was victorious Saturday in the tri-meet with California and Michigan in Berkeley. It is the Cavaliers’ first victory in the three-year history of the meet that features the top public universities in the nation.
The Cavaliers won the meet on the strength of winning eight of the 19 events. Virginia finished with 143 points, while Michigan was second with 132 points and Cal was third with 111 points.
“It was a big result to win this meet against two great programs,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “Two years ago, we came out here for this meet and got embarrassed across the board. It was a humbling experience, but to come back to Cal and win it this year shows how much progress our program has made over the past two years.”
The best event of the day for the Cavaliers was 200m where they dominated with a 1-2-3 finish. Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) won in a time of 23.81, just ahead of teammate Peyton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.). Chaney’s time of 23.85 moved her into seventh on the UVa all-time list. Kiana Hairston (Manassas, Va.) was third in a time of 24.82. Lavender was also victorious in the 400m in a season-best time of 53.33.
Virginia won the 4x100m relay with the quartet of Chaney, Andrea Wright (Chesapeake, Va.), Lavender and Tori McKenzie (Chatham, Va). They crossed in 45.44, the fourth-best time in school history.
The field events were headlined by Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio), who won three events on the day. She led a 1-2 finish in the javelin by winning with a mark of 141-3, moving her into eighth-place on Virginia’s all-time list. Caitlin Mautz (Doylestown, Pa.) finished second with a mark of 139-9.
In the discus, Bohan won with a mark of 143-0, just ahead of teammate Carter Green (Ashland, Pa,), who had a mark of 140-8. Bohan also won the shot put with a mark of 52-1.75.
“Christine is establishing herself as an elite thrower,” said Fetzer. “If there is such a thing as a five-tool athlete in track and field, she would be it. Her ability to improve in all four throwing events has been great to watch.”
First-year Mia Barron (Minnetonka, Minn.) was the winner of the long jump with a season-best mark of 18-5. Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) tied her PR of 12-5.5, just half an inch shy of the school record, to win the pole vault.
Sara Sargent (Philadelphia, Pa.) moved into sixth place on Virginia’s all-time list in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:35.51 as she finished third. Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) was third in the 100m hurdles, crossing in a time of 14.06, the ninth-best time in school history. Iona Lake (Norwich, England) entered the top-10 list in the 1500m with a time of 4:21.30 as she finished second.
The Cavaliers will have two weeks to prepare for their next meet, the Virginia Challenge. The meet will run April 17-18 at Lannigan Field.
