Kiawah Island, S.C. – The 22nd-ranked Virginia men’s golf team finished second at the Kiawah Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C. after Tuesday’s final round was cancelled due to weather. With most teams having completed between five and seven holes, standing water on some greens made the course unplayable and the round was cancelled. Virginia stood at 5-under for the day when play was halted.
The Cavaliers finished the tournament at 5-under 571. Charleston Southern won the event at 10-under 566. Duke and Augusta are tied for third place, four strokes behind UVA.
Senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) led UVA with a fifth-place finish at 4-under 140. Freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) placed ninth at 3-under 141. Junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) tied for 23rd at 1-over 145 while senior Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.) was 32nd at 147.
Bard finished under par in each of his last four fall tournaments. His finish marked the 11th time he has placed in the top-10 during his career.
“We had a very nice end to the fall by finishing second at the Kiawah Classic,” said Virginia coach Bowen Sargent. “It was a shame we didn’t finish today’s round as Derek was three under thru six and Jimmy was four under thru seven when play was halted. Individually, Derek and Thomas had outstanding weeks. We’ll need this kind of consistency going forward to accomplish our team goals. I was most proud of our consistency this week as we had all ten rounds at 74 or lower. To be a great team this is the type of team effort we need week in and week out.
“Anytime you can collect wins over two, top-10 teams it makes for a nice week. Today’s runner-up finish, combined with our other four finishes (first, fourth, fifth and 10th), puts our national ranking in good shape heading into the spring. Over the next four months we’ll go to work and make individual improvements over the winter to prepare for our championship season.
Augusta’s Robin Petersson claimed medalist honors at 10-under 134.
The tournament was Virginia’s final event of the fall season.
