No. 1 Virginia Opens ACC Championship Against Clemson Friday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team opens play at the ACC Championships at 5:30 p.m. Friday against the Clemson Tigers at WakeMed Park in Cary, N.C. Virginia (15-1-1) is the top seed in the event, while Clemson (13-3-1) is the four seed.
The winner will advance to the finals at 12 p.m. on Sunday to face the winner of Friday’s match between Florida State and North Carolina. The Cavaliers defeated then No. Florida State 1-0 in the regular season, but did not play North Carolina.

Virginia claimed the ACC regular-season championship with a 9-1-0 mark in conference play and secured the top seed in the championship. The lone blemish came at the hands of then No. 6 Notre Dame, a 2-1 loss in double overtime.
The Cavaliers enter the tournament with the top scoring offense in the ACC at just over three goals per game. Junior Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) paces Virginia with 10 goals on the season, while the ACC Offensive Player of the Year in senior Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) has eight goals and nine assists on the season. Junior forward Morgan Reuther (Chantilly, Va.) has nine goals on the seasons as the Cavaliers have seen 14 different players score this season with 10 players each netting at least three goals.
Senior Emily Sonnett (Marietta, Ga.) earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors, anchoring a back line that has helped post 11 shutout victories on the season, seven of them in conference play. The Cavaliers have allowed only nine goals through 17 matches as the back line and junior goalkeeper Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) have limited opponent’s scoring.
Virginia and Clemson met on October 8 with the Cavaliers claiming a 2-0 victory in the regular-season matchup on the road. Senior Brittany Ratcliffe (Williamstown, N.J) and Reuther scored the two goals for Virginia to help claim the contest between the top-five teams.
