Virginia Falls to George Washington

WASHINGTON-The Virginia men’s and women’s squash teams fell to George Washington on Tuesday (Nov. 28) at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts in Washington D.C. The No. 13 Virginia women’s team (2-3) was edged by No. 12 George Washington (2-2), 5-4, while the No. 17 Cavalier men (3-3) dropped to the No. 11 Colonials (3-2), 6-3.
“Given that tonight’s match was between the 12th and 13th ranked teams, it was always going to be a closely fought affair,” head coach Mark Allen said. “They proved too strong for us at the top of the order in positions one, two and three, but we had solid 3-0 wins at eight, seven and four with Carroll, Mayhew and Danforth all playing to the best of their ability. So the match really ended up being determined by the very close matches played at positions five, six and nine. Tyson pulled out a win in five games, but Keene went down in five, despite a good comeback from 2-0 down. Doss gave everything she had and had several chances to take the match into a deciding fifth game, but went down in four very hard and tense games. So in the end, a 5-4 win to GW that was every bit as close and dramatic as the scoreline suggests.
“The guys went down 6-3 to the 11th ranked team in the country, George Washington. We went behind 4-0 from the first round of matches on the court, but the second set faired better as we went 3-2 with wins from Dudzik at nine, Dalglish at seven and Blake at one. Captain Mason Blake had arguably the best win of his college career so far, and first-year Chris Dalglish put in a very gutsy performance to come through in a long and entertaining match. Third-year James Dudzik was only called into the line-up at the last minute and did very well to get a win playing two places above his normal position on our roster.”
On the women’s side, George Washington captured an early lead with wins in positions three and nine, respectively. Junior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) recorded the first point for the Cavaliers with a win in position six against Engy Elmandouh (5-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-9, 11-2), while sophomore Elle Carroll (New York, N.Y.) evened the match at 2-2 with a win in position eight against Haley Hunt (11-6, 11-4, 12-10).
The Colonials followed with a win in position two, but junior Madeleine Mayhew (New York, N.Y.) answered for the Cavaliers with a win in position seven against Arunachlam Vedikammeyamai (11-8, 12-10, 11-9).
George Washington secured the match win, topping positions one and nine, respectively.
Senior Carey Danforth (Greenwich, Conn) rounded out the competition with a win in position four against Emma Tryon (11-6, 11-5, 12-10).
On the men’s side, freshman Chris Dalglish (Fort Washington, Pa.) recorded the team’s first point with a win in position seven against Juan Laguna (13-11, 8-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9). Junior James Dudzik (Greenwich, Conn.) topped position nine against Lucas Stauffer (12-10, 11-5, 7-11, 10-12, 11-8), while senior Mason Blake (Philadelphia, Pa.) rounded out the match with a win in position one against Mohammad Al-Terki (11-8, 11-7, 5-11, 7-11, 11-9).
The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, December 2. Virginia will compete against Columbia and Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y.
