CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 9 Virginia rowing team placed second overall at the two-day Clemson Invitational on Saturday (April 14) on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.

The Cavaliers had all five crews (Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, Second Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight) compete in the Grand Finals today.

The Cavaliers’ weekend was highlighted the Second Varsity Eight’s title on Sunday. The Cavaliers outdistanced second-place Ohio State 6:17.57- 6:20.79 for the win.

“Good racing Friday evening and today,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “We are making progress to be able to finish second at this event, but we are striving for more over the next few weeks. Congrats to Ohio State on the win and thanks to Clemson for hosting such a great regatta.”

UVA added a second-place finish in the Second Varsity Four (7:16.58) and third-place finishes in the Varsity Eight (6:16.20) and Varsity Four (7:07.92). The Cavaliers placed fifth in the Third Varsity Eight (6:40.32).

No. 4 Ohio State won the invite title with 130 points to edge the Cavaliers, who tallied 124 points. No. 12 Wisconsin placed third with 113 points. No. 17 Indiana (111) and No. 13 USC (110) rounded out the top-five.

On Friday (April 13), Virginia’s Varsity Eight (6:24.52), Second Varsity Eight (6:25.44), Varsity Four (7:08.90), Second Varsity Four (7:16.26) and Third Varsity Eight (6:34.75) won their respective heats.

On Saturday morning, UVA claimed heat wins in the Varsity Eight (6:36.97), Second Varsity Eight (6:33.37), Varsity Four (7:13.05), Second Varsity Four (7:20.84) and Third Varsity Eight (6:39.77).

No. 4 Ohio State, No. 9 Virginia, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 13 USC, No. 15 Washington State, No. 17 Indiana, No. 18 Syracuse, No. 20 Oklahoma, Boston University, Central Florida, Cornell, Duke, Louisville, Minnesota, Northeastern, Navy, Oregon State, Tennessee, Tulsa and UCLA joined host Clemson in the 21-team field.

UVA hosts No. 4 Princeton on Saturday, April 21 at Lake Monticello. First race is set for 9 a.m.
