SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A header goal by Jack Lynn as time expired sealed a 1-0 victory for Notre Dame (11-6-3) against 10th-seeded Virginia (10-4-3) in the NCAA Tournament round of 16. The 6th-seeded Fighting Irish advance to play No. 1 Indiana in the quarterfinal.
In the closing seconds of the first overtime session, Tommy McCabe served a ball from just outside of the box to the far back post where Lynn was able to head it past a diving Marcel DaSilva (Ormond Beach, Fla.) for the game-winning score. The goal was Lynn’s third of the season and Notre Dame’s first in 210 minutes played this NCAA Tournament.
The game-deciding tally came a little over a minute after Joe Bell (Wanaka, New Zealand) had his strike from long distance tipped away by a diving Duncan Turnbull. The stop by Turnbull was one of his game-high three on the night.
Notre Dame held a 12-11 edge in shots but only two landed on target. DaSilva, making his second-straight start in goal was credited with one save.
