Harlem, N.Y.- The No. 12 Virginia women’s squash team (5-5) split the day at the SL Green StreetSquash in Harlem, N.Y., topping No. 8 Cornell (1-1), 6-3, after falling to No. 7 Columbia (2-0), 6-3, earlier in the day.
Virginia opened the day with a loss to No. 7 Columbia with senior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.), junior Elle Carroll (New York, N.Y.) and senior Madeleine Mayhew (New York, N.Y.) capturing wins for the Cavaliers. Tyson opened the match with a win against Julia Mash in position six, recording a 13-11, 11-7, 11-9 victory. Moments later, Mayhew defeated Diana Masch 8-11, 11-3, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6, before Carroll defeated Pranjali Sharma in position eight 11-8, 11-9, 11-3. The Lions would win in the remaining six matchups to record the victory.
The Cavaliers rallied in their second match of the day, topping No. 8 Cornell in a hard-fought match that saw three matchups battle into a fourth game and two positions battle into a fifth.
Cornell opened with wins in position three and nine, but Tyson’s 7-11, 7-11, 13-11, 11-7, 11-3 five-game win against Mimi Delisser in position six put the Cavaliers on the scoreboard.
The Big Red moved ahead 3-1 with a win in position two; however, Virginia secured wins in the remaining five positions to clinch the match.
Freshman Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) defeated Lauren Leizman 11-9, 11-9, 11-3, while sophomore Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) followed with a win in position eight, capturing a 11-8, 11-8, 5-11, 12-10 victory against Hannah Scherl.
Freshman Emma Jinks (Stratford, Canada) captured a win in position one, defeating Nghi Nguyen 11-7, 11-5, 11-5, while junior Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) topped Colby Gallagher 6-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-8 in position four and junior Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) topped Lucy Martin 11-8, 17-15, 3-11, 13-11 in position seven to close the match.
Virginia will conclude its weekend with a match against New York University tomorrow. The two teams will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the SL Green StreetSquash.
