Noting the Cavaliers

  • This is the third game this week for the Cavaliers who downed Coppin State, 55-41, on Sunday and American, 57-54, on Wednesday
  • This is the Cavaliers’ last game before taking an 11-day break for final exams
  • Junior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) matched her career high by soring 25 points on Wednesday night. It was the first 20-point performance by a Cavalier player this season and this first since J’Kyra Brown scored 24 points in an overtime victory against Indiana last season at the West Palm Invitational(12/18/17). The Cavaliers only had two 20-point performances last season
  • It was the first 25-point performance by a Cavalier since Willoughby scored 25 points in a WNIT game at Saint Joseph’s on St. Patrick’s Day during her freshman season (3/17/17)
  • Willoughby went 5-of-7 from three-point range against American. She now leads the conference in three-point shooting percentage, making 54.5 percent of her attempts (18-of-33). She went into that game shooting 36.1 percent (ranking fourth)
  • Willoughby and sophomore guard Brianna Tinsley (Madison, Va.) have each made 18 three-pointers this season (tied for 12th in the conference)
  • Willoughby has scored in double figures in six of the last seven games and now leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.4 points per game
  • Junior forward Lisa Jablonowski (Ernster, Luxembourg) had a career-high 13 rebounds against American. It was the second time in her career that she had the lone team-high for rebounds (previously had a team-high eight against Florida State her freshman season) and the first time that she was the leading rebounder in a game for both teams in a game
  • Jablonowski averaged 3.0 rebounds per game coming off the bench in the first five games of the season. Since moving into the starting lineup four games ago, she is averaging 8.25 rebounds per game
  • Virginia has outrebounded its opponent in all but two games this season (Central Michigan/Michigan State)

Last time out

  • The Cavaliers downed American 57-54 on Wednesday night at JPJ
  • The Cavaliers twice overcame double-digit deficits to pick up the victory. Virginia trailed 17-7 with 2:36 remaining in the first quarter, going on to erase the deficit and take a 23-22 lead with 3:38 remaining in the first half. UVA trailed 44-31 with 5:50 remaining in the third, erasing the deficit and taking a 47-44 lead with 7:18 remaining in the game
  • Willoughby scored Virginia’s first 10 points of the fourth quarter, going on a personal 10-2 run. She scored 13 of Virginia’s 18 points in the period and hit all but one of UVA’s field goals in the quarter
  • The Cavaliers held the Eagles scoreless for the final 5:51 of the third quarter and for the first 4:27 of the fourth quarter, a span of 10:30 between baskets for the Eagles
  • Virginia shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) while American went 21-of-58 (36.2 percent). Virginia held a 38-34 edge in rebounding

Scouting Radford

  • The Highlanders are coming off a 55-44 loss at Virginia Tech on Tuesday. Radford led 23-19 at halftime. The Hokies, rattled off 12 consecutive points and outscored RU 19-5 in the third to fend off the upset bid
  • Radford shot 29.7 percent and 18.8 from three-point range against the Hokies, but held VT to 31.6 percent shooting
  • Virginia will be the third ACC team they have faced as they also played at NC State, falling 75-58
  • Savannah Felgemacher leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.5 points per game and a team-best 14.0 rebounds per game
  • Radford was selected as the preseason favorite to win the Big South
  • Radford returns three starters from last year’s team that finished second in the Big South regular-season standings and went on to knock off Penn State in the opening round of the WNIT in overtime
  • Senior forward/guard Destinee Walker earned preseason First Team All-Big South honors and redshirt junior Lydia Rivers was placed on the All-Big South Second Team
  • Virginia holds an 8-7 advantage in the all-time series and has won the last seven meetings
  • Radford’s last win over UVA was in a neutral-site contest in 1979 (53-49)

On the Horizon

  • After an 11-game exam break, the Cavaliers will travel to Orlando, Fla., to participate in the Florida Sunshine Classic Tournament, which is being held at Rollins College. The Cavaliers take on Alabama on Thursday, Dec. 20 and South Florida on the 21st. Both of those games tip at 4 p.m.
  • Virginia closes out its non-conference slate by hosting Charlotte on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m.
