CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –Six members of the Virginia wrestling program turned in podium finishes at the George Mason Patriots Open on Sunday.
Justin McCoy (New Paris, Pa.) took home a first-place finish at 157 pounds, going 4-0 on the day to claim his third consecutive first-place finish in as many open tournaments this season. McCoy is now 13-0 on the year after competing at the Hokie Open, the Wolfpack Open and the Patriot Open.
Sam Book (Fairfax, Va.) took home a third-place finish at 125 pounds, going 4-1 on the afternoon, while Krystian Kinsey (Havelock, N.C.) went 2-2 on the way to a fourth-place finish at 165 pounds, including a pin of Rutgers’ Brett Donner.
Two wrestlers recorded fifth-place finishes with Gray Hart (Richmond, Va.) finishing fifth at 141 pounds and Victor Marcelli (Massillon, Ohio) finishing fifth at 184 pounds. Both Hart and Marcelli went 3-2 on the day at their respective weight classes. It is the second podium finish of the year for Hart and the third podium finish of the year for Marcelli.
Patrick McCormick (Poquoson, Va.) rounded out the podium finishes for the Cavaliers with an eight-place finish at 133 pounds. It marked his second time placing in an open tournament this season.
