Virginia softball senior Lacy Smith hit her ninth home run of the season at Furman on Wednesday (March 13) night. The blast marked a new career-high for the first baseman, who needed just 22 games to eclipse her previous three seasons.

Along with the nine home runs, Smith currently reads Virginia and ranks among the nation’s best in batting average, runs batted in and slugging percentage.

SMITH’S NATIONAL RANKINGS
Batting Average – .465 – 31st
Home Runs – 9 – 11th
RBI/Game – 1.15 – 50th
Slugging % – .915 – 21st
Total Bases – 65 – 16th

THE HOME RUN NUMBERS
Smith is now just four home runs away from tying the Virginia single-season record. If she maintained her pace of a home run every 2.2 games, Smith would finish the season with over 20 long balls. For her career, Smith now has 23 home runs to rank ninth all-time at Virginia. Her next homer would make Smith just the 13th Cavalier to ever post double-digit home runs in a season.

ABOUT THE AVERAGE
With her .465 batting average this season, Smith is .041 above the Virginia single season record. No Cavalier has ever hit better than .425 in a season. Averaging 1.5 hits per game, Smith is on pace to accumulate 78 hits this season.

STELLAR SLUGGING
Smith’s .915 slugging percentage would crush the Virginia single-season record of .766 set by Kristen Dennis in 2002. Of Smith’s 33 hits this season, 14 have gone for extra bases.

RUN PRODUCTION
Smith has already driven in 25 runs through the first 22 games of the season, just three shy from matching her best output in a single season. The run production also has Smith headed for some lofty company, as her pace would challenge for the school record of 58 RBI in a single season. Kristen Dennis also set that mark in the 2002 season.
