Three Cavaliers Named to USRowing U23 National Team Camp

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia seniors Izzi Weiss (Chicago, Ill.) and Georgia Gray (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore Emily Ashton (Albany, N.Y.) have been named to the 2019 USRowing Under-23 National Team Selection Camp, USRowing announced Thursday (April 11).
 
Spearheaded by Virginia’s Kevin Sauer, the women’s camp will select the U23 women’s eight, four, quadruple sculls and four with coxswain that will compete at the 2019 World Rowing Under 23 Championships scheduled for July 24-28 in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida.
 
The camp also will select a pair to race at USRowing’s Under 23 World Championship Trials in early July. The camp will be held at the Thomas Temple Allan Boathouse in Charlottesville, Va. Sauer will be joined by former assistants Brett Gorman (USRowing) and Josh Gautreau (University of Washington assistant coach), Jamie Snider (Yale University assistant coach) and former Cavalier standout Kelsie Chaudoin (Stanford University assistant coach) to coach the sweep selection camp. 
 
In 2017-18, Weiss, Ashton and Gray were part of the UVA Varsity Eight that won the ACC championship and placed seventh at the NCAA Championships. Weiss, who earned All-ACC first-team honors, coxed the U.S. to a gold medal in the women’s four at the World Under-23 Championships in Poznan, Poland

The No. 10 Cavaliers return to action on April 19-20 at the Clemson Invitational.
