CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.  – The No. 3 national seeded Virginia Cavaliers (14-3) upended the Robert Morris Colonials (9-8) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night, 19-10, at Klöckner Stadium. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Cavaliers in the NCAA Tournament, their longest in program history.

The Cavaliers received career nights from Mikey Herring and Ryan Conrad, two seniors playing their final career games at Klöckner Stadium. Herring scored a career-high six goals and Conrad scored a career-high five goals, as the duo was responsible for 11 of UVA’s 19 goals. Matt Moore also added a career-high seven assists and a career-high nine points.

Virginia advances to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2012.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The wet conditions delayed the scoring to start as the game was scoreless until the 7:18 mark in the first quarter when Michael Kraus fed Matt Moore for the game’s first goal. Moore’s score initiated a 3-0 UVA run to start the game. Kraus and Mikey Herring all scored during the spurt.

Virginia’s 3-0 run was part of a larger 7-2 Cavaliers streak, which was capped by Herring on a Moore assist with 12:26 left in the first half. By Half UVA owned a 9-5 advantage and used an 8-2 streak to start the second half to help put the game away.

FROM THE LOCKER ROOM
“I am very thankful for the men I am able to coach, because of the grit and intensity that we bring. I love the way we ride. We didn’t get a lot of opportunities in the first half, but in the second half, wow. Listen to how loud our bench gets when we’re riding, they are just feeding the guys on the field and exciting them to go faster and make those plays. John Fox diving for one of those ground balls, that is just symbolic of our team. I am very, very grateful to have men who are passionate and treat every ground ball as if it’s the last one on earth. I thought we shot well, despite the fact that Alex Hager made 16 saves. He’s a very good goalie, we saw that two years ago when we hosted Robert Morris and he had 19 saves. He’s not an easy guy to get the ball past. I feel like the advantage of Mikey Herring is he’s a little bit more poised when he shoots, he doesn’t just let it rip. He needs to get a little bit closer, he’s a little bit of a sharp shooter, but boy he can find those spots. I was very, very impressed with Ryan Conrad. Two fourth years there, that’s interesting, their final game here in Klöckner stadium and they are stepping up, making all those plays, and scoring all those goals. And they are smart plays. That’s what Mikey Herring and Ryan Conrad bring us. Not only that intensity and hustle, but that experience.” – Lars Tiffany
